Living on a budget I was trying to figure out a gift that was thoughtful and economical. I made these for 12 of our friends. It ended up costing a little over $5 for each gift and took me around 2 1/2 hours total (including picking up the supplies at Walmart).
Here’s what you need to make a dozen Christmas gifts (You can also change the color of M&M’s and give them as shower favors, Halloween treats, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, etc…):
Two 5 lb. bags of flour- $1.94 each
Baking Powder, Baking Soda, Salt- $3.24
42 oz Cooking Oats- $2.48
42 oz of M&M’s (whatever colors you need to fit your theme)- $8.48
Two bags of 23 oz chocolate chips (semi or milk- I used milk chocolate)- $4.48 each
Two 32 oz bags of brown sugar- 1.72 each
5 lb bag of sugar- 2.98
Box of 12 wide mouth quart jars- $10.44
Funnel for the jars (TRUST ME IT IS WORTH YOUR MONEY!)- $1.27
Fabric for the tops of the mason jars (again colors to fit your theme)- $5
9 yards of thin ribbon (fit your theme)- $3.04
Labels (optional- you could also print on scrapbook paper & tape on)- $7.97
Notice the pecans in the picture- well they were supposed to be in the jars, but they didn’t fit so I am not including them here since I did not use them. You CAN if you can make them fit!
Total: $61.18 which means……….
$5.10 per gift!!!! 🙂 It doesn’t get any better than this!
Once you have all of your supplies here is what you are going to put into each mason jar.
Obviously first you need to wash and allow them to dry. Your friends will appreciate this!
The first thing you are going to put into the jar is 1 1/3 cups of flour, 1 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of baking soda, and 1/4 tsp of salt. You have to PACK THIS IN- all of this stuff will barely fit if you don’t keep it packed in! (Notice my bowl in the back where I was making a batch for Jeremy’s Birthday Month- more on that later).
After the flour mixture add 1 cup of oats (forgot to take a picture of just this step)
Next add 1/2 cup of M&M’s to each jar. Again, pack it in tight!
After the M&M’s you’ll add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips.
Next you will PACK IN 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
Last but not least 1/2 cup of white sugar. The original recipe Bakerella called for pecans as the last layer, but I could not fit them. Some people don’t like pecans anyway, so I figured if they want them they can add them when they cook the mix!
Now cut your fabric into 6 in. x 6 in. pieces. Cut your ribbon into 25 in. pieces. Place a piece of fabric on top of the fit lid and then secure it with the screw part.
Add your labels, and voila!!! Yay! Now you have 12 beautiful, thoughtful, inexpensive Christmas gifts!!
Here is the recipe for each jar of cookie mix:
1 1/3 cups of flour
1 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp of baking soda
1/4 tsp of salt
1 cup of oats
1/2 cup M&Ms
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup of white sugar
Here’s what you’ll add to the mixture to make the cookies:
1 egg, 1 stick of butter (slightly melted), 1 tsp of vanilla
Mix all of wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Place onto a cookie sheet and back at 350 for about 10 minutes.
